Cami’s Waffle Mozzarella Sticks
I am SO PROUD of Cami. She wanted to make these cheese sticks for while, but she’s determined to not fry them. So she put them in the waffle maker. Cause why not? Other people do.
Here’s her recipe, she made it by herself, and I got to taste test it for her. I had 3, and then I literally left the kitchen before I could eat anymore. Crispy. Cheesy. Melt in your mouth delicious. AND surprise, they are gluten free.
Waffle Mozzarella Sticks
6-8 mozzarella cheese sticks, cut in half
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 egg, whisked plus 1 tbsp. water
1/4 cup all purpose GF flour
1 cup Gluten Free Panko bread crumbs
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
Pinch of salt
Preheat your waffle maker on medium high.
Cut the mozzarella sticks in half.
Using 3 small bowls, fill one with the egg and water, mix with a fork. One with the flour. Season with salt and garlic powder. The final bowl with the panko breadcrumbs.
Dip the mozzarella sticks into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture and the breadcrumbs. Dip one more time in the egg mixture and finally the last round of breadcrumbs. This makes it extra crispy. Set aside. Repeat until all pieces are coated well.
Lightly grease the waffle maker with olive oil before each batch. I used a pastry brush to coat some oil on all the groves. If your waffle maker is round and has 4 quarters, place 1 coated cheese stick into each quarter. Close the waffle maker and cook for 1 1/2 -2 1/2 minutes. Until the cheese is heated through and the edges are golden and crispy. (Check on your first round about 1 minute into the cooking time, to gage your temperature and how long your cheese stick will need. )
Repeat until all the cheese sticks are cooked, golden and crispy. Serve warm with a side of your favorite pizza sauce. Even a sprinkle of fresh basil makes it look extra pretty.
Happy baking!
