Family Favorite Recipes: Gourmet Macaroni and Cheese

This recipe takes your traditional macaroni and cheese up a notch. Your husband will praise you. Your kids will eat every last bite. Your roommate will write home to mom about your wonderful baking skills. It’s a keeper at our house. I hope you will love it too-

Gourmet Macaroni and Cheese

1 lb. pasta, cooked and drained
¼ cup butter
¼ cup flour
1 ½ cups milk
1 ½ cups chicken broth
3 cups cheese, grated
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Dash of ground nutmeg
½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
Possible sides:
Blue cheese crumbles
Cooked bacon pieces
Caramalized onions
Roasted tomatoes
Ham cubes
 

In a medium saucepan, melt butter and add flour, cooking for 30 seconds. Whisk in chicken broth and milk. Bring to a simmer or until the white sauce comes to a desired thickness. Add seasonings and cheese. Allow cheese to melt.
In a buttered dish, add pasta and pour cheese sauce over the top. Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. 
Serve with bowls of your favorite sides. The possibilities are endless!
